Caterpillars crawl around in the dirt of life, living a selfish and destructive existence. According to britannica.com, "caterpillars are known for their voracious appetites. They generally eat the leaves of various types of plants... Leaf-eating species can cause extensive damage to fruit trees, crops, ornamental plants, hardwood trees, and shrubs." Although it is a predator, it lives in fear and hiding from other predators. According to beechhollowfarms.com, many caterpillars feed at night and then spend the day hiding in a rolled-up leaf, or clinging to plant stems hoping to avoid detection by... the numerous other predators that would eat them." The caterpillar makes little to no contribution to its environment until it has been transformed.
